Attendance & Punctuality
Sandwell Community School is committed to improving pupils attendance and punctuality. Pupils should be at school, on time, every day the school is open, unless the reason for the absence is unavoidable.
Every half-day absence from school has to be recorded by staff at the school as either AUTHORISED or UNAUTHORISED. This is why information about the cause of each absence is always required, by telephone to your child’s campus, or the Attendance Officer on 07525 801 774 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org by 9am on each day of absence.
Authorised absences are mornings or afternoons away from school for a good reason like illness or other unavoidable causes. The school will determine whether an absence is to be unauthorised or not. Unauthorised absences are an offence by the parent under section 7 of the 1996 Education Act. These may include:
• keeping children off school without a good reason
• truancy from a whole session
• absences which have never been properly explained
• children who arrive at school too late to get a mark
• taking unauthorised holidays
The school applies the following procedures in deciding how to deal with individual absences (more detail can be found in the full version of Sandwell Community School's Attendance Policy which can be found here).
Our school day has two legal sessions. AM and PM. If your child hasn’t registered on either session then you will be contacted by our Attendance Officer on the day. After 3 days of absence you will then be visited at your home by our Attendance Officer.
Pupils who arrive after school starts will be recorded as late and pupils who arrive after the register closes will be marked unauthorised.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, holiday requests will not be approved or authorised. If you choose to take an unauthorised holiday you may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice by the Local Authority. Please see our Attendance Policy for more information.
